Mobile Ichijyo
The art of tea preparation is a time honored tradition in Japanese culture. The mobile ichijyo architecture is dedicated to this procedure. One can dedicate oneself to this meditative procedure in a very small space, to be more precise, in a single transportable room. Toshihiko Suzuki’s design strongly reminds one of a simple paper lantern. A flat aluminum box is pulled apart much like an accordion and constitutes the setting for the frame, which become floor and ceiling areas for the light mobile ichijyo. In between there is a curtain made of white mosquito netting which separates the interior from the outside world. The floor of the mobile ichijyo is covered with a tatami mat, which offers just enough space to sleep upon. Another slightly altered form of this design is a creation of what is seemingly arbitrarily arranged cables, pipes, and material which form a similar intimate, secluded interior.
